A Day in the Life
Home Instead caregivers were a literal lifeline in the care of my parents in the last 5 years of their lives.
My sister and I live far from Saskatoon (in New York City and Vancouver) with jobs that made it difficult to spend extended time with our parents. We first engaged them in the months before our father entered long-term care as a help and support for our mother as his life at home became more and more difficult. This continued through his move to the nursing home and then through our mother's move from their apartment to her own care home. During this time Home Instead caregivers provided help not only with household chores, shopping, transportation and the like but were an immense support to my parents in terms of nurturing and companionship.
My parents were in separate care homes for nearly 4 years before they passed away in early 2016. Home Instead continued to provide companionship to both of them, facilitated visits between the two homes 3-4 times per week, took them on outings, for birthday lunches, medical appointments, etc., all of which increased their quality of life immeasurably.
It is also impossible to express how much my sister and I depended on and are grateful for the Home Instead caregivers who were involved with our family. Living at a distance during this time in my parents' lives was at many points unbelievably hard but we knew that we could call on Home Instead at any time and they would be there and, most importantly, we knew that our parents were cared for and not alone.
Not only did they provide practical services but they were always available to communicate with my sister and me regarding our parents, how they were doing, what they needed, etc. For me the most important aspect of Home Instead is how nurturing, supportive and caring they are, completely devoted to their clients well being and to making their lives, and consequently the lives of their children, easier and better.
My sister and I cannot recommend Karen and Greg Charyna and their group of caregivers at Home Instead highly enough. The difference they made in all of our lives is one for which we will always be grateful and we treasure each and every one of them.

Peace of mind is what comes to me as a description of our family's experience with Home Instead Senior Care.
My family consists of my husband and I, our three children, one of whom recently married but is still studying at University, the other two at home studying and trying to figure out career choices and a life plan. This is a busy time in all of our lives.
My parents, in their mid-eighties, were relatively content living independently in their own home. Several years ago my father began a battle with cancer and chemo treatments that would prolong his life. This is where our story really begins.
We live several hours' drive away from their home. As their needs became more obvious, the driving to endless appointments, the decline of my father's health and strength and driving capabilities, along with my mother's fear of driving in the city, my siblings and I took turns driving them, attending oncologist appointments and making sure they were comfortable in their home with everything they needed.
As life goes, there were many times there was no one available to be with them. This was a very stressful time being torn between our own family's needs and being there for our parents. This presented us with a situation we felt was impossible to maintain.
This is when we hired our first caregiver from Home Instead Senior Care. With the help of our 'favorite sisters' as we called them, we achieved a peace of mind that we would not have had any other way during this journey.
Over the next few years we added to my Mom and Dad's team, and with the caregiver's help, we were able to keep my father home until his passing. This was a great comfort to us all. Home Instead caregivers continue to be companions for our mother now that she is alone.
Home Instead Senior Care surpassed all of our expectations and has given us all that peace of mind.
